Large Ro-Pax ferries operating on French and Mediterranean routes carry both passengers and vehicles, with complex car decks, passenger decks and public spaces. In recent years, blackout and fire drills on some vessels have shown that even with clear announcements and active crew guidance, passengers still struggle to locate fire extinguishers, hydrants, emergency exits and muster stations—revealing that markings are not intuitive enough and lack adequate luminous performance.

To address this, more operators are adding Glow in the dark IMO fire safety signs and escape indicators in car decks, engine rooms, passenger corridors and public areas. Using 0.62 m × 45.7 m luminous rolls as a base, they can mass-produce icons for fire extinguishers, hydrants, hoses, alarm buttons, emergency exits and muster stations. Combined with luminous tapes in different widths, stair nosings, floor arrows and corridor edge lines can be designed as a coherent system.

These glow in the dark IMO signs use a PVC luminous layer with pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive. They charge under normal lighting and can maintain visibility for hours in power failures or smoky conditions. With careful placement, passengers in dark or smoke-filled corridors simply follow the glowing icons and arrows to quickly find the nearest fire equipment and escape exits.

Such upgrades significantly improve drill metrics and passenger self-rescue reaction times, and they also help ferry operators achieve higher scores in safety evaluations by French maritime authorities, classification societies and insurers.
