Frequent Power Cuts in Peruvian Fishing Ports? Photoluminescent Escape and Fire Signs Protect Cold Stores and Processing Plants

August 11, 2025

Peru’s coastline is dotted with fishing ports and seafood processing plants. Many cold stores and primary processing facilities sit right on the quay, exposed to high humidity, salt spray and unstable power supplies. Traditional PVC plates and painted arrows are common, but in night-time outages or smoke, workers can barely see exits, stairs or extinguishers, creating serious safety risks.

Port operators have begun adapting shipboard solutions ashore by installing Photo luminescent Marine IMO symbol signs stickers throughout cold stores, corridors and staircases. At key points such as “EXIT”, “FIRE EXTINGUISHER” and “EVACUATION ROUTE”, they now use standardized IMO pictograms printed on photoluminescent stickers. During normal operation, these absorb energy from lighting; when power fails, they emit bright green or blue-green light to guide workers to safety.

Because the same technology was developed for harsh marine environments, the glow in the dark IMO signs withstand condensation, low temperatures and salt air far better than conventional plates. For Peruvian seafood businesses, this upgrade raises their safety management level, reduces accident and insurance risk, and makes it easier to pass audits by international buyers who increasingly check emergency facilities in supplier plants.
