Tight Newbuild Schedules in Korea: Printable IMO Luminous Stickers Solve the “Last Mile” Problem for Shipyards

January 1, 2024

In major Korean shipyards, newbuild orders remain strong and hull, machinery and outfitting all progress under tight schedules. However, many project managers share the same headache: as delivery approaches, luminous IMO signage inside the vessel often becomes a delay factor. Traditional metal luminous plates rely on outsourced screen printing; once production slots or drawings change, delivery schedules are easily squeezed.

To address this “last mile” issue, more yards are adopting Printable IMO luminous stickers. Based on 0.62 m / 1.24 m × 45.7 m photoluminescent rolls, there are two typical workflows: using PVC material with solvent / eco-solvent / UV digital printing to output all required IMO symbols for the entire vessel at once, or using PET material with cutting plotters for precise cutting of vector graphics and smaller icons.

The printed luminous graphics are then laminated onto PMMA (acrylic sheets), PVC foam boards or aluminum composite panels. After being cut and labeled by compartment, installation teams can fix them by adhesive or screws according to system and area. Continuous stairways and escape routes are marked with 5 cm / 10 cm / 25 cm glow in the dark tapesto form continuous guidance lines, which are intuitive and fast to install.

These photoluminescent marine IMO symbol signs stickers use a 240 μm PVC luminous layer and pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive. After a short exposure to natural light, sunlight or interior lighting, they can glow for hours in the dark, meeting IMO requirements for brightness, decay time and corrosion resistance. For Korean shipyards, the biggest benefit is that luminous signage production no longer depends on external vendor lead times. It can be fully integrated into internal processes, and design changes or additional symbols can be handled quickly by reprinting, effectively reducing delivery delays caused by signage issues.
